From a pure practical point of view I am using mobile search more than I ever did when I was out and about with the laptop which is now being left in the office or at home. Information and news searches are still my biggest use. Some of the broadsheet newspapers such as the Times have mobile ready versions of their paper although the ones that don't render very nicely in my browser, Opera Mobile 9.5.
Other than news mobile search has been popular for game downloads, music downloads and especially video downloads have been increasing. I have been comparing sear hes done on my desktop and also on my phone. There hasn't been any real difference with my ad hoc survey but will continue looking for anyone who is actually optimising sites for mobiles. Mobile search is still in its infancy and the areas it is making any impact is in the travel, phone and music industries but I expect that to change with the growth in mobile search.
