Phorm

There has been just about universal approval in the blocking of Phorm on Amazon and Wikipedia. Phorm is a controversial targeted advertising technology. It gives ISP the ability to track where their customers are going and then gauge their interest to serve up the most relevant ads.

There is a EU legal action against Phorm and they have raised the hackles of privacy campaigners. The Register has really taken Phorm on resulting in Phorm starting their own PR campaign.

Following users browsing habits are not new and in themselves not a bad thing. Having used traffic packages for many years I know the value of seeing what users are doing on your site. What I don’t like is the fact that this information will be passed to third parties and that information can be attributed to a particular user. It is rather like having someone following you around. Phorm is a step too far.
